The Plot
After the Cullen's stand against the Volturi, a rogue group of nomadic vampires realized the key to defeating the Volturi was not so much to outnumber them but to tear down their defenses. This select group of vampires, with elite powers that they had managed to hide from the Volturi out of sheer resistance to join their ranks, managed to overtake the primary defenses of Jane and Alec to successfully overtake the royal vampires. The entire clan, from the elders to the guard, were eliminated save 3 individuals who only wanted to be in power and didn’t care what allegiance that fell with: Jane, Alec and Demetri.
It didn’t take long for The Calumny to settle into the Volterra castles, and they immediately set about to change the vampire world to their ways. Unlike the Volturi, they not only thought vegetarian vampires were repulsive but felt they were an outrage to the ways set by vampires for centuries before and even considered trying to systematically eradicating any vegetarians that refused to conform.
Seeing this as a chance to get revenge on the Cullen family, Jane made a point to turn the Cullen family into an even more negative light in the eyes of the Calumny, and quickly convinced them that the rather large, civilized coven was truly a threat. Not only would the Cullen family try to turn all vampires into vegetarians, she convinced the Calumny that they also were simply biding their time before attempting a full out take over of the vampire world in much the same way the Calumny overtook the Volturi.
The only problem that Jane forgot about was Alice, and every time she made a pointed effort to turn the Calumny against the Cullens, Alice would have a vision. When the final decree was made to eradicate the Cullens and anyone freely and openly associated with them, Alice had a powerful vision of the family being torn apart and eliminated that set the Cullen family into motion to prepare for an even bigger battle than when they faced the entire Volturi guard.
